How to Get a Driver’s License in Ontario
Ontario uses a Graduated Licensing System (GLS) that helps new drivers gain experience before full privileges.
Step 1: G1 License (Learner’s Permit)
- Minimum age: 16
- Pass written knowledge test ($16)
- Vision test at DriveTest centre
- Restrictions:
- Drive only with fully licensed driver (4+ years’ experience)
- Zero blood alcohol
- No highways with speed limits over 80 km/h (unless supervisor is a driving instructor)
- No driving between midnight–5 a.m.
Step 2: G2 License (Probationary) – After 12 Months G1
- Take the G2 road test ($53.75, or included in G1 package if prepaid)
- Restrictions:
- Zero alcohol
- Passenger restrictions for drivers under 20 at night
- Can drive alone
Step 3: Full G License – After 12 Months G2
- Take the G road test ($91.25)
- Full driving privileges, no restrictions
Accelerated path: If you complete government-approved driver training, you may take the G2 test after 8 months instead of 12.
