How to Get a Driver's License in British Columbia

All new drivers must complete the Graduated Licensing Program (GLP) managed by ICBC.

Step 1: Learner's License (Class 7L) – Age 16+

  1. Pass the knowledge test ($15)
  2. Vision screening at ICBC
  3. Parental consent (if under 19)
  4. Restrictions:
  • Must drive with a qualified supervisor
  • Zero blood alcohol tolerance
  • Must display an L sign
  1. Take the Class 7 road test ($35–$50)
  2. Restrictions:
  • Zero alcohol
  • N sign displayed
  • Passenger limits (unless supervisor present)
  1. Pass the Class 5 road test
  2. No restrictions — full driving privileges

2026 Update: ICBC has proposed eliminating the second road test for drivers with clean records.
